First and foremost, we know you don't really need much to go to the beach. Sun protection is a non-negotiable, with sustenance in close second and obviously swimsuits are encouraged for the most part.
However, once you start really looking into getting a decent beach set up vs going on the bare minimum, you'll see that investing in some good quality pieces that will last you for many many summers truly is the gift that keeps on giving. Each beach day is different, some involve a quick dip, and overs are long and lazy and require a little more prep for a day of doing nothing. Consumerist culture tells us more, more, more and while we would obviously love for our customers to buy everything, we're not about that and would rather help you to curate your ideal set up, which can be added to and evolve over time. The beauty of a good set-up is that it will (hopefully) get you down to the beaches more, keep you comfortable, cool and sun-safe.
Here's a quick round up of what we have available and why we love them:
- Retro beach umbrellas: available in traveller and premium sizes. Easy to carry, don't weigh a lot and are simple to put up. The traveller is good for 1-2 people, the premium has a wider canopy and is good for groups or families. If you're drawn to a specific colour, let that be your decider rather than size.
- Umbrella holders: the sand screw is a must-have for beach days - it will help to keep your umbrella upright and protect your beloved umbrella (to a degree) from launching out of the sand should a gust come up. The pop out stand works well for smaller balconies, and the patio umbrella is your more permanent at home base (because yes, you can in fact use your beach umbrella at home).
- Coolers: we have the classic, the tote and the cooler box. The classic is good for 1-2 people, the tote is good for everyone (especially those with kids) and gives good hands-free carrying, and the cooler box is good for parties, travel, boats, or those more full-on beach days (also acts as a mini table which is great).
- Chairs: we have the pop chair and the foldable beach chair. The pop chair is your light and easy option (lazy beach readers, this ones for you), and the foldable beach chair might require an extra trip to the car but is totally worth it if you're going to be spending a couple of hours relaxing (bringing the grandparents or planned some sundowners, then these are for you).
- Towels and ponchos: our love of Turkish cotton goes waaay back and there was a point (long before The Beach Bums began) where everyone ended up getting Turkish towels as birthday gifts. The wonderful thing about these gifts is that they're still being used MANY years later - a testament to how wonderful and long lasting Turkish cotton is. Towels are pretty standard, we all use them. Ponchos are a great option for children, or for anyone going for a quick swim or surf. We end up lazing around in ours for HOURS in summer and have to remind ourselves that they're not a substitute for actual clothes.
- Cotton throws: once you've used one on a beach, you won't want to go back to straight-up beach towels. Nobody wants sand everywhere and this is your best option for keeping things sand-free. Our go to combo is cotton throw, plus towels/poncho for post swims.
Feel like that's a lot and it's just made it harder to choose? Here's a suggested set-up for each type of beach session.
- For solo beach days: the traveller umbrella + sand screw + tote cooler + turkish towel + pop chair
- For couples / besties: any umbrella + sand screw + classic cooler + pop chairs + turkish towels
- For the big family day out: premium umbrella + sand screw + foldable chairs + cotton throw + cooler box + turkish towels and ponchos for the kids
- For the sundowner session: foldable chairs + cooler box
